Default Coolant additive

Does Jaguar reccomend a or any additive for the coolant? A lubricant/sealer.

Just use a good quality coolant mixed in proper proportion with distilled water and you will be fine.

Are you thinking of Bar's Leaks or similar? Opinion is evenly divided between those who swear by it and those who swear at it.

Back in the 1960/70's days of the XJ6 Series I era, the Jaguar Workshop Manual recommended use of this additive at coolant change. Those days are long gone and Jaguar service procedures no longer even mention it.

Modern 'coolant' is a more complex chemical cocktail than the old 'anti-freeze' and requires no additives other than the correct dilution with distilled water.

I'll now don my Flame Suit and await the crescendo of denials.

Barr's Leaks is for tractors. You might as well put four of sand and one of cement in a modern Jaguar.
(Graham - can I borrow the asbestos ?)

GM recommended Bars Leaks tablets for the Cadillac Northstar V8 to fill the voids in the block because of the porosity. Typical GM... rather than improve the block castings... I owned a '97 Eldorado (lovely car except for the motor) that puked its head bolts at 91,449 in part because of porosity in the block and the Bars Leaks didn't help one bit.

Maybe four of sand and one of cement would have been better !

I spent many years at a Cadillac dealer and remember all this very well :-). It took some years before they got the Northstar engine straightened out.

Subaru offcially had the same "fix" for leaky head gasket in the late 90s. The product they sent us was made by Holts.

Cheers

I use the organic acid type coolants in my XJR cost a bit more but is extended drain
I had a problem with my octopus bottom hose got three of them that failed within weeks of each other
I usually add a bottle of redline water wetter to all my engines just in case but living on the Gold coast Australia haven't needed to make sure it has anti freeze properties it doesn't get bellow double digits in winter up here more worried about overheating in summer
