Dash background lights
I've lost all my background dash lights, center console lights, door arm rest lights. Center console selection lights work when I select a certain item (like heater control, seat heaters etc) but the "background" illumination lights do not work. Dimmer does not seem to work or have any affect. Is there a common fuse or connection that controls all the background lights? Makes it hard to drive to work at 5 in the morning!
Looks like fuse #2 (10 amp) in the left side heelboard fuse box.
Near as I can tell the dimmer switch wants supply voltage from the fuse, key "on" voltage from the ignition switch, and a signal/voltage from the light switch. With a test light or meter you could do some basic checks. If it comes down to a wild guess I'd go with a new dimmer switch.
Beyond that I'm no help. Never had to delve into that circuit, sorry. Someone will come along with better info.
Cheers

I'm correcting a number of issues on a '96 XJ6, and I had the exact problem. There is an "Illumination Control Module" which manages the dash and console lights. It's located just beneath the steering column an looks like this:
