Default Difference between XJ6 and XJR

I am looking to buy myself a 1996 XJR with 110k on the clock. Asking price is around $4500. Can anyone tell me the difference between the XJR AND XJ6 I own a 96 XJ6 and its a nice car, but with the paint issues I am having with it, I would rather sell it and jump into a XJR. I know the XJR is supercharged, but besides that if someone can point me as if they are the same problems like the XJ6's have, like clock, seat memory problems, rear shocks, etc. And if there any problems that the XJR has the the XJ6 does not? What would you prefer the to purchase between the 2? I wouldn't mind putting myself back into a XJ6 but the price has to be right with nice interior and body.. thanks

All the same problems as the regular XJ6.

The supercharger and related equipment are durable and reliable. However, some repairs (lower radiator hose and throttle body service, for examples) are more labor intensive on the supercharged engine.

If more power (80+ horspower), bigger tires, and firm suspension are attractive to you, buy the XJR. If not, buy a standard XJ6 or VDP.

Cheers

I would def like to get the XJR. I am going tomorrow to look at one. Doug, how about the sound system in the XJR, I see there is a speaker type looking thing on the back of the rear seats, is that a subwoofer? I know theres a Harman Kardon amplifier in the trunk, isx this a powerful system with a bass? My XJ6 had the same speakers, but no amp or anything...

Yeah, the XJRs came standard with the amplified HK system and CD player....at least for the USA market.

One subwoofer, four mid-range, four tweeters. Interestingly, the dashboard speakers used with the standard stereo are left in place but simply not connected.

I think the system sounds terrific. Audiophiles say it's junk :-). If nothing else it's an old design that can't possibly match modern technology.

Most sensors the same. MAF and injectors different. Some cooling hoses different. Belt drive accessories mounted differently; different belts.

So I went to look at a 1996 XJR yesterday. The guy is asking $4500. There was a issue with the sunroof, only the back panel would go back, but the big panel stayed in place. Would not tilt either. Also, the reach motor was shot in the steering wheel. Car was repainted the same oem color, and had a few dings here and there. Engine bay area was pretty dirty. Rims need to be refinished. That's all I know of with the issues that it had. What does everyone think? $4500 a good price? BTW there is 111,000 on the clock.

That's probably about right for a "fair condition" '96, perhaps a tad high.

Frankly, I'd hold out for a nicer example.

yea I was thinking it was a bit high as well. I tired to bring him down to 3800-4000, but he wouldnt go below 4500. SO tomorrow I am going to go check out a 1995 XJR with 120K in Miami. He is asking $3,000. hopefully it will be the right one.

If it doesn't look like it's been loved, walk away or look really really closely. For example, it might be wise to pull all the ignition coils and check them for cracks. How's the service history? Has anyone changed the gearbox or diff oil lately? Are the tyres perished from standing around? Do all the seat motors work?

The reach motor is probably a $45 driveshaft and a couple of hours of labour as the steeering column really has to come out.

I don't know what they go for in the US, but in the UK you can pick up a nice one for £2000 ($3200) and a rough one for £1000 ($1600).

yea the first xjr I looked at yesterday was a 1996. It was a beautiful British racing green color. It was in pretty good shape besides the sunroof needed the tilt and slide assembly's, and the steering wheel reach motor was shot, and clock. other than that it looked pretty decent, but also I did not test drive it due to the fact it was to expensive.

I am going to go look at a 95 xjr tomorrow and am closely inspect it. From what I was told by the grandson, it is his grandmothers car from day 1. She fixed everything on it, and he said that everything works except for the driver side window. Don't know if it's a fuse, regulator, motor, etc. Car has 120k, hopefully I will be able to make a deal and drive it home soon

Do the headlight assemblies differentiate at all?

The glass lens is different for LHD vs RHD

The only other difference is whether the headlamp assembly has a motorized levelling mechanism or not

But they all bolt up the same way so the brackets/frames themselves are interchangeable

There is no XJ6 v XJR difference per se.
