Smile Differential recap

Sometime back I had a thread going about my differential leak on the right side flange. I just wanted to follow up and cover what I did and the fact that the leak has stopped.

Several people said that just changing the fluid might stop the leak since the flange was sealed with an O ring and not a gasket. Also, the subject of the breather came up. If the breather is plugged it will build up pressure and that will cause a leak. And the breather cannot be removed without taking off the rear cover (ugh).

So, here is what I did. I changed the fluid. And while it was up on the rack I rotated the plastic cap on the breather, back and forth a lot of times. The plastic cap is snapped on and cannot be removed whithout breaking it. Under the cap is a little valve plug that keeps water from entering and will let air out, if it is not plugged with crap. So I though that rotating it would loosen the crap and help it to function if it had been plugged. Following this simple action, change fluid and rotate the breather cap, seemed to do the trick.

Happy motoring guys and gals.

Glad to hear it!

I will try that with the cap next time I top up the diff fluid as mine still leaks.

What you can do is spray the cap thoroughly with something like WD40 which is a mild solvent so that the crap loosens more easily. Try getting the straw under the cap to pipe joint.
