Default Does my check engine light work?

hi, I was wondering if my check engine light works? Because when I take my car to a jaguar repair shop, it shows a faulty tps sensor which was fixed, egr valve, and fuel injectors. I dont have any of this, even when I scan with a generic nothing comes up. Anyone know anything? thanks.

First, whenever a repair shop suggests x-y-z repairs *ask* them why they are needed and how they determined what the faults were, what the tests results were, etc. This doesn't have to be, and shouldn't be, adversarial.

As for check engine lights.....

Different faults have to fall within predetermined parameters before triggering the CEL and setting a code. Length failure "events", ignition key cycles, miles driven, engine and/or road speed...all sorts of stuff....can go into setting up the failure parameters. My experience with my '95 XJR is that the system is generally reluctant to set a code and turn on the CEL.

Sometimes a shop can evaluate live data from a scan tool and identify problems that haven't fallen through the window to turn on the CEL.

Cheers
DD
