Hi guys.

I am having a problem engaging gears on my XJ6.

I can go from park, around the J gate but not far enough for gear "2" to be engaged, even though the lever is all the way around to "2".

I can adjust the cable inside the car and make it longer so that it when i move around the gate i can actually be in "2" when the lever is in that position. However when i return the lever to "P" i am not actually in park, as if now the cable is too long to pull it all the way back into park.


Again i can adjust it so park engages, but then i cannot engage "2" again, and so round we go.

The shifter itself isn't very smooth, but i have only just picked this car up from a friend who was giving it away as he can't run it any longer.

Prior to the car being stood for a good few months he said the shifter worked fine.

When i first went to move the car from his drive i struggled to get it out of Park and reckon i may have stretched the cable or something??

I have posted another thread about removing the center console as i think i need to remove this to access the cable end from inside the car.
