Default Whining noise coming from the engine/trans?

I have a whining noise coming from what sounds like the transmission but I'm not sure. It goes up in pitch as you rev the motor at a stand still and when your driving. The transmission shifts fine and there is no leaks. I replaced the drivers side axel some time ago and when I removed it a small amt of trams fluid came out, maybe a half pint or a little more. The whining got a little worse for a short period ( maybe a day or two) then went back to what it was before. Is This is a sealed trams since there is no visible dipstick or any wa that I can see to add fluid. I assume there has to be because there is a trans pan.

I notice nobody bothered to answer your question. Did you come right and manage to find the fault? I have an '09 XF and had a similar problem in November last year. Took it to Jaguar and they replaced the idler pulley, but the noise was still there - popped the hood only to see an oily substance all over the side of the engine bay and traced the leaky substance to my car's water pump - it was coolant and the waterpump had failed making this whining noise that engine's revs. All good ever since the water pump and belt were replaced. Hope this at least helps.

Is it the AWD version? If so it will probably be the transfer box.
