This is a 1996 XJ6 4 liter Sovereign: My previous oil change was done using 5W 50 oil. Should I stick to this or are there better ones I should go for?
Just follow the chart. I live where it gets hot and cold. I use Castrol Edge 0w40 (full synthetic) and I change it every 7,500 miles, which ends up being about twice a year.
You seem to live where it gets very cold....not hot. 5w50 seems too thick for you, I would drop down to the 5w40 range...or use 0w40, certainly seems ideal for you.

A follow up question: Would you change to a thicker oil as the engine gets older and more worn? My XJ has 110 000 miles on it.
