I did this a long time ago so memory is fuzzy. There are 2 screws that hold the extension to the tunnel. You will need to remove the veneer panel and the leather panel to access the screws.
I think the veneer panel is glued to the extension, but was easily removed without damage if treated gently. I thing it has a steel backing.
Here's what the tunnel looks like underneath, showing the spire nuts that the extension is screwed to.
That’s exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you very much for taking the time to educate me and provide a photo. I was too scared to try and pry up the veneer but will give it a careful go.
That’s a great question. I kind of doubt it but would like to know. I have a LWB parts car and a standard wheelbase daily driver. I posed the question because the extended console seems to be obstructing removal of the rear vent which is perfect on the donor car and broken on the daily driver. The extended console would be a nice addition to the daily driver. The daily driver doesn’t have a heated rear seat so the buttons would be obsolete.
The photo is from a SWB car so I would guess all cars had the brackets from the factory.
There is very thick soundproofing over the tunnel which is cut around the brackets. So I suspect it is only carpet covering the brackets and you may be able to feel through it to confirm position.
I can confirm the spire nuts are present on swb models,I can feel them through the carpet, but wether they line up with my Centre rear console I’ve just got is another matter lol
I’m trying my level best to remove the extended console but haven’t had any luck at all. The wood veneer is well below the surrounding edge. When I try to pry the wood piece, the surround is flexing and the finished wood piece isn’t moving. Tired to remove the piece with the heated rear seat switches and it doesn’t want to budge either. I feel I missing something and that if I keep up I’m going to damage the parts I’m trying to preserve. Any more advice on how to get the console out is much appreciated.
Happy that I can now remove the vent from the rear console which I have used to replace the sad looking broken and broken louvers in the ‘96. Sadly the console extension would need to be shortened to fit in my ‘96. Perhaps a future custom project. For now it can stay in the ‘97.
I’d be very interested to see how that comes out, part of the problem with shortening is going to be lining up the holes for the screws with holes under the carpet. I also like the idea of cup holders being added to the equation.
