Default Fact or fiction

Hello all, I recently bought a 1997 xj6l. When I first bought it my problem was that the computer (ECM,ECU) had gotten wet due to a water leak somewhere in the area of the "A" post and would not run. So off to the local Jag Tech with a used computer, after a reprogram all was well. I thought I had fixed the leak until the other day the car would not start long story short wet computer no start. While try to figure out what was wrong I disconnected the throttle position sensor to see if the car would go into limp home mode. I had just read on another site that If the throttle position sensor is disconnected and you try to start the car then the ECM will lose its idle reference and you will need to get it reprogramed is this true? I have dried out the ECM and the car will run now idle seems ok no check eng codes its still raining here so I have not taken the car for a ride and I will not be getting this car wet again till I am sure I fixed the water leak. I will also be in the market for a new (used) ECM. Thank you for your time.

My XJR, Rose, does not have a sunroof but its ECU was also badly destroyed by water which found way to it from above. There are invariably drainage passage ways near both front pillars as well as the bonnet lourve that meets the windscreen. I would suggest folks to raise the car and find out these water exit pipes and free them from blockage, and for the peace of mind, also carefully wrap the ECU and the connectors to guard them against attack by water and moisture.

found the water leak. The tray that the air intakes are in for the heater/ac rotted out just below the "A" pillar. There is some foam in a chamber that must have gotten wet causing the metal to rust out, I actually found a hole into the pass compartment just above the computer. Fixed and sealed all now no leaks

Hi family truckster,

We'd all appreciate some photos of the leak area if possible. Also, you might consider editing the title of this thread to include the wet ECM to help others with similar problems find your resolution.

Cheers,

Don
