My 97 XJ6 4,000 is having a problem starting, was told it is my IAC motor, it chugs and dies and eventually starts, it runs fine after it starts, but the check engine light is on.
I am going to a parts store to get my error codes. I will update when I have them, in the meantime can anyone link me to more info on how to clean this part or something. I really can't afford the work at a even an after market shop, but I do have some experience working on American cars.
If you open the throttle (with your foot) while cranking, does the engine start and run?
The IACV only allows significant air when the throttle blade is closed, You can bypass it by holding the throttle open slightly.
Maybe the EGR valve is 'hung-open'?
That will create quite an intake leak.
Dear Bob,
Yes...if I pump the accelerator several times...but it doesn't always on first try, often it will shudder and croak. I got busy today and didn't get a chance to get to the store for error codes.
Failed camshaft position sensor makes the ECM "guess" as to TDC. Reportedly may have to crank for up to 30 seconds before the computer sorts things out and fires it successfully. After that, running should not be affected. There are threads about the other two codes but they seem a bit mysterious and no one has yet sorted them, from what I've read.
Ahhh, very cool! That explains why. Thanks for the info. I've explored how to replace the sensor, seems pretty straight forward, however its location isn't, lol. I will replace bracket for it as well since that will probably fail next grrr. Any suggestions on all of it?
OK, so the camshaft sensor has zinc been replaced. Still having starting issues. I am sure I read somewhere about messing with the sensor required calibrating something else. Can anyone give me insight?
The Cam sensor is used to tell the ECU when Cyl 1 is at TDC. So it needs to be set in the correct position when installed - in the same way as you would align a distributor in days gone by. In fact it's actually installed where the distributor used to be on the older AJ6 engine.
There is a window on the sensor that will show an indicator.
I'm attaching an old "how to" document that I saved many years ago - don't know from where so I can't give the author credit. Hopefully it will explain what you need to do.
