Default Help! Alternator belt tension

Hi All,

I've just spent a torrid afternoon (7 hours in all!) trying to replace all three belts on my XJR.

The aircon & drivebelt were easy enough, but I'm really struggling to get the right amount of tension into the alternator belt.

Taking it off was a real pig - I slackened the 13mm bolt at the bottom of the threaded rod (tensioner adjuster), and the 10mm bolt on the top of the tensioner adjuster (above the alternator), and also the 17mm bolt through the bottom of the alternator as mentioned somewhere else.

It then took me AGES to slowly work the two 15mm (not 14mm on mine) nuts down the adjuster rod until I could get the belt off.

My problem is now I just cant seem to get enough tension regardless of how far back up the rod the two bolts go...

If anyone has any advice I'd be extremely grateful! Thanks
Specifically - which bolts should be loose when I'm adjusting the two tensioner nuts? Ta

Either your local dealer or take a look on here, useful site for getting part numbers but parts can also be ordered from them too although I've never used them.

Hahaha....you bring back a memory from 1984 and Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS)
GySgt Kerr: "Who bent the f*&k outta yer rifle, candidate?"
a fellow classmate: "Sir! GySgt Crenshaw, United States Marine Corps bent the f&^k out of this candidate's rifle, sir!"
Gunny Kerr (Eying down the barrel): "Well...the f^*k's bent out of it, that's for sure."
