Default Help With Rebuilding Steering Rack Please!

Hi all first post here, I am rebuilding a power steering rack for a friend, I have managed to get it completely disassembled. However I am stumped as to how I access the seal located about the mid point, I suspect there is an inner tube that can be removed so the seal can be accessed, But I cannot figure out how to get it out, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This is the seal I am referring to down the bottom.

Which seal kit part # and from what vendor source are you using ?

See attached file below for the ZF 7852 series as that manufacture number is hidden from view on car

Are you going back in with mounting block shims as a aftermarket item ?

Not too many here have gone that deep into a rack rebuild. Most just buy a rebuilt and turn in the core. Did you make any progress?

G'day Toby,

Have a look in the attached book mate, it might be helpful.

Cheers,

The question becomes If a leak in the area is from the reservoir bottom clamps migrating leakage all over the right side . you can cut off an inch from the old compromised swished hose for fresh material

Or just the outer most seal on the steering rack that can be changed without rack removal

The steering rack noise / cavitation can be resolved with a drain / refill as the noise goes away with fresh fluid

I've got a spare rare x305 (V12 x300) steering rack I pulled in a wrecking yard I'd like to rebuild. I see Rock Auto has 3 varieties of pump rebuild kits, anyone got an opinion on which is best as I've read about issues with seals not fitting.

SUNSONG 8401305
EDELMANN 8834
FVP 8834

Power Steering Rack and Pinion Seal Kit for BMW E46 ZF 7852 633 053 seems to be right kit?

What else is needed before I tear it all apart? Not sure what the differences are between x305 and x300 racks so that could get 'interesting'.

Here's a picture of the one on my car...
TIA

I used the Edelmann kit for my pump a few weeks back. Everything fit fine but there was one extra O ring I couldn’t figure out where it went… so I didn’t use it. Didn’t help my power steering issue since I think it’s the rack at this point…. But at least the pump is taken care of. Recommend using a zip tie or rubber band to keep the vanes on the pump rotor held in place when you disassemble

Thanks. Did you take any photos while disassembling?

I did not. However searching the forum here I was able to find some prior threads on rebuilding the pump. One had a you tube video in it which was helpful.

Don't know if this applies to the V - 12 as maybe the same pump and coupler ?
