Default Hey everyone!

Hey everyone! I'm new to these forums and I'm actually not a Jaguar owner, I own a 1983 Mercedes 240D but a good buddy of mine owns a 95 XJ6. I posted in the wrong forum by accident because I didnt know his chassis number :P ok what's going on is he is having electrical problems and we can't figure out what it is. The car will hold a charge but only for about a few hours, he just got a new battery from the jaguar dealership and they tested it and said it was fine. Its fine during the day but when it sits overnight the battery is dead in the morning.. Were thinking its shorting or grounding... Thoughts? Thanks for the help!

No specific area to point you. It's too wide open with possiblities.

Hi,

No advice specific to Jaguars, but my wife's old car had this problem. Easiest way to troubleshoot it is to connect an ammeter in series with the battery (with the engine switched off!) and see how much current is being drawn. Close the doors since interior lights will draw a bit and confuse things. You'll probably find that the current drawn is over 5A if the battery is losing charge overnight. Now, start pulling fuses out from the fuse box until you find the one that makes the current drawn drop to well below 1A (some current draw is ususal, things like alarms, radio memory backup etc) and you will then know which circuit is bad and can troubleshoot it better.

If none of the fuses make the current draw drop, it's possible (as in my wife's case) that the problem is the diode rectifier on the back of the alternator. If this shorts or goes faulty, it can sometimes cause large current draw. Not sure if the Jag alternator can have a new diode pack installed or if you need to replace the whole thing. We needed to replace the whole thing (it was on a Rover).

Hope this makes sense and is of some use!

Richard
