Question How many cranks to start is normal?

Curious, if everything is working properly, how many times the the starter turns over before the engine catches and drops into idle?

So for example, our Honda Pilot normally just takes one quick turn of the key, and one "rowr" (starter sound) starter cycle to start.

My XJR usually takes two or three "rowr" cycles to catch. Every rare once in a while it will start with just a quick hit of the key.

Curious what is normal, or how the car was supposed to start as new.

There is a relationship in the 2 rotations of the crankshaft to the camshaft not taken into account as you position the camshaft sensor window . This means the camshaft sensor can be out 180 degrees . Andy had a different procedure by looking in the oil fill cap to see the position of the # 3 valves to see the exact position of the crankshaft in the 4 cycle sequence and the timing mark on the crankshaft gear wheel was different the way he stated it . Never thought through the sequence of the sister cylinder on there firing order and if you are to look at the # 3 in that the cylinder numbering is opposite the earlier AJ6 engine . My head hurts .

Easy thing to do would be to rotate the crankshaft around one more turn then place the camshaft sensor in place . I never looked for Andy's crankshaft marks but he knows best .

My 1996 XJR starts like all modern cars I have owned since the introduction of Engine Management & fuel injection, including my 1980 fuel injected Series 3 XJ6 (rudimentary Engine management) which I owned for over 20 yrs.
Same as your Honda, first turn of the key, if it is churning all is not well (perfect?)

My 3.2 was a cranker, until I reset the cam angle sensor, then on the 1st stab.

The R is on the first rotation.

All the V12's are on the 1st stab, now.

The 2 X200 things are also fine, although the Silver beast has a female moment sometimes, and rotates twice before bursting into life.

... that's what I suspected

I already have checking the camshaft position sensor on my list, but thought I'd ask about others' experience.

Thanks!
