How to tell if key has transponder?

Hello,

do anyone knows how to tell if the key (black) has a chip for transponder or not?

car is a 1996 xj6 3.2 lwb vin 775098

thing is car only came with one key and i need to order another one online as i cannot find any locksmith here with one. However i found online some with transponder and some without.

1995-1997 X300 does not equipped with chip for transponder.

Hello, thanks for your answer! Are you sure? This is an european car (Portugal).

in other group a user told if the key had a black square on top it would have a chip, saw mine and it has! Other users wiith 96 cars also referred having a chip/transponder


this is my key and on top i can see this black square

The transponder in the key is for the Immobilser.

US cars do not have the immobiliser system. European cars DO have the immobiliser system.

So short answer for you is that your key must have a transponder.
