Would it benefit my car to put a K&N cone or cold air intake in it? I know it could net you 10-15 horsepower which would be nice. Are there any downfalls to adding one in this car?

You might pick up a slight bit of power and fuel economy....but I think as much as 15 hp is a tall reach.

The beauty of a K&N is they last literally forever. Don't use too much oil...it might foul the Mass Air Flow sensor

Where have you found a cold air set up for the Jag? I'd be interested

Cheers

I used a off the shelf ricer tube from an Advanced store. Purchased a good K&N for it and it came off the MAF on my xj6 and the turn in the tube put it right behind the left headlights. With the gap in the headlights you can see where you can get some fresh cooler air.

I picked up a little extra punch, not much milage but I use the pedal a little more. Next move will be working with my local Exhaust fab. to make a better performance exhaust.

The only kit I've ever seen for an X300 I found at Mina Gallery,

http://www.minagallery.com/jagxp/Jag...e%20intake.htm

I tried putting an off the shelf cone on the end of the MAF, but a little later on I put the stock air box back in.

Yeah, I've seen the Mina kit. I've been hoping for a true cold-air kit, though....one that draws air from outside the engine bay.

Maybe I'll fab something up one weekend.

Cheers and thanks

I will try to get a pic of my this evening. Right now she is covered with snow, it workes perfectly and with the air coming in behind the headlights it does get cold air. I also re used the plastic cover over the relays behind the left front headlights as a heat shield. I love the sound of the big 4 liter as it sucks air.

Yea, I was planning on using an AutoZone ricer kit as well. Brian Felts, if you could do a writeup on how to mod the intake like you have done, that would be excellent.

Has anyone tried the Mina Gallery one. I don't want to buy it if the improvements are not worth the price and I'd rather not buy one off the shelf.

cold air intake and problems
I am about to put the stock airbox back on and use KN filter. I spoke with a shop and does performance tuning and he told me he recommended it because I was sucking hot air out of the engine bay. Could be the problem with all the lights coming on in jags all the time. He said that I was loosing low end power because of this. I noticed NOTICED THAT ONCE THE CAR HEATED UP THE LIGHT WoULD ALWAYS COME ON. I AM CHANgING TODAY BACK TO STOCK AIR BOX. i BOUGHT ONE OFF THE SHELF AND HAVE BEEN USING IT FOR A COUple OF YEARS and am getting this light for a couple of years. will let you know change in light condition.

I have had a cone filter on mine for a couple of years now and had no problems, a little more mpg and probably 10-15 more horses which does make a difference. I managed to pick mine up on eBay for £25 used

I won't install a K&N or other similar filter on a car that I care about. I think that they do have some applications in racing, but I'd rather take a high efficiency paper filter over an oiled filter that let's much more dirt pass through. For a few (if any) horsepower made at the top end, it's not worth it to me.

And a lot of those so called "Cold Air Intakes" are anything, but...
Most vehicle manufacturers locate the air intake inside a fender, or at the front header panel (in front or next to the radiator). Putting a cone air filter in the space next to the belt drive system (which is behind the radiator) does not make much sense as it will suck warm/hot air from the radiator.

I just put a new K&N filter in mine yesterday, and although I'm not sensing a big difference in HP, it does feel like the engine (97,500 m) is pulling stronger. Previous poster is right, they last, or are warrantied to last for 1,000,000.

K&N suggest that filter servicing be performed at 50,000. I don't intend to let the filter go this long before cleaning, but the warranty is for all intents and purposes a lifetime warranty.

I Have ran them in everything and had great results. The key is to clean and oil them correctly. Do not over oil and you will never have maf problems....do not smash them in a housing that they do not belong and they will not come apart.

I'm looking at the Mina one too. They claim +12hp at the rear wheels from a dyno. The price seems decent too at $135. I may jump in and buy it.

I have a K&N filter in both my 99xk8 119,000and no oil consumption my 96 toyota rav4 265,000 mi and burns ½ qt oil in 3000mi and about to put one in my 2000 s-type. Am I satisfied with them YES! Have I had a problem with MAFS NO! it is what you want and if you drive be the seat of your pants it feels good. As for the cone I do not use them so I am unable to comment about them.
