Default The key fob problem

I've been very unsuccessful in finding out how to program my key fob. Car came with a factory fob that used to work and the battery on it has been dead for years. I am simply trying to reprogram it to the same car and can do nothing to get it work. I have tried the valet button 5 times, I've tried the "on" hold valet, off, release valet press 5 times - nothing works.

Please don't tell me that I have to go the Jag dealer and pay 100.00 to have them program one old beat up key fob...

Did you:

1: open the trunk and drivers door
2: turn the ignition switch on
3: rock the valet switch 5 times

And if you did, did the car beep?

I had trouble with mine initially, I think I was rocking the switch too fast

Also, I read somewhere if you are trying to get an existing fob to work with the car you just need to unlock with the key then press either fob button three times but I don't know where I saw that

No beep and no luck. Tried the manual unlock thing - found that on google, no luck with that one either. Does anyone know where to find the remote module in the engine bay? Maybe something else is wrong?

You saw this post in the "quick links" sticky above, right?

Keep in mind that the car will not go into learning mode unless the trunk latch and lights are working properly. The car must know that the trunk is open.

Also after an unsuccessful attempt, car might be stuck in valet mode. Close up and start car to clear it.

Remote takes two 2016 batteries.

DON'T pay the dealer to do this.

Also is the valet switch working and connected? Perhaps the wiring has come loose - my cigarette lighter sockets were disconnected by a previous owner, it's easy to pull the centre console out the check if it's wired in

Does working properly mean that the trunk release from inside the car is working? If that is the case, it won't work...because the trunk release is faulty right now. I have to open the trunk with the key, walk back and sit down, turn the car to "on" then run the valet switch sequence. Can't get it working. Although - our of nowhere after messing with the memory keys, the steering wheel started working. It now moves out of the way when I exit the drivers seat and returns when I get back in. AWESOME! I was like...I wish everything I try and fix works out like this.

This one I am not sure about - I'll have to take out the console...just haven't ventured down that road yet. Would unplugging the battery and then reconnecting after 30 min help any?

I have no idea, however taking the console apart was easy even for someone of my totally inadequate skill level :-)

To remove the ashtray, just open the centre console cubby box and remove the two philips head screws on the top front lip, beside the catch. The ashtray will then just lift out, giving access to the wiring below.

The trunk release inside the car, and the electric button release on the trunk itself are actually a separate issue. However, however you open the trunk, you must see the trunk lights on and the red 'trunk open' indicator on the dash lit. Then you can proceed to step 2, opening the driver's door!

Trunk lights and the dash indicator mean that the car knows the trunk is open. These two items are turned on by the switch that is wired to the trunk latch itself. The switch has been known to fail. Mine was missing altogether from the VDP. Only a couple of dangling wires left.

Maybe it's just my sequence of events...the trunk light does light up on the dash, my door is generally already open though because I have to get out of the vehicle to open the door. Is that finicky? I think the alarm module is toasted or dirty, but I don't even know where the module is so I can check out connections or anything.

When I did mine at first I was opening the trunk from the trunk-lid button & it didn't work. I tried by opening the trunk from the dash switch it worked the first time. It may not make sense but that is the way it happened for me.

The in-dash button does not work and I am not sure where to go to get that one working! I'm sure it is linked to something in the trunk release...I just don't know how it's all architected yet to figure it out. Another project!!!

I have not been able to find anything aftermarket yet...but ebay has used ones for anywhere from 100-150$. Not for a guy on a budget for sure.

Are you sure you have 2 batteries stacked in the fob?

Yes, the key fob lights turn on correctly when I press the buttons and I've validated that they are in correctly.

Anyone with any ideas on how to get this key fob to sync with the car? Any way to test the security system?
