hi everyone, I have just developed a knocking noise when shutting off the car, and sometimes when starting the car as well. Its coming from undernearth the front area, almost feels like when the car shakes when turning it off its hitting onto something cause the knocking.... does anyone know of anything???

 

Not aware of any "common" stuff on the X300.

The exhaust comes to mind, and that would be either from a fracture, or old age.

The engine mounts, maybe, and that could lead to the exhaust hitting something. Have not heard of the AJ16 being particularly harsh on these mounts, like the older cars were.

The only way would be to jack it up, and peer around for some shiny rubbing witness marks, and if its a fairly heavy "knock" that should be easily visible.

Something just came to mind (it happens). Very soon after buying my X300 I had this odd knocking when starting the engine, never noticed it when shutting down, and I eventually found the large bolt through the front crankshaft pulley was loose, obviously someone had been in there and not done it up properly. It sounded just like "bearing knock", and the brain was really travelling down misery street for a few days, but when I found it, the relief was instant.

 

Sounds like the exhaust but iv never known a front one to go (is there even one?) iv had rears go which makes a knocking on startup, shut down and when you rev. Does it also knock over bumps?
