Default Locks cycle five times to lock.

1996 XJ6L VDP

When the locks are engaged they cycle 5 times before they lock: Down-Up-Down-Up-Down.

They unlock in one cycle as intended.

This happens maybe 15 out of 16 times and has been going on for a few months.

Other than wearing things out from over-use I don't mind it, but I'd like it go away (since my friend laughed at me when I gave him a ride the other day).
:-)

Thanks for any ideas!

chuckjag,

Have you checked to see if any of the locks are "sticky" or don't go down properly? The door locks on X300's are notorious for getting stuck or not working properly, especially after 20 years. My '96 XJ6 has this issue as well, but it is the result of an attempted repair on the passenger door where we had to take a piece out. That lock, on my car, has to be manually engaged/disengaged, so when you lock the car it keeps sending a signal to try and lock all of the doors.

If you press the unlock twice, does it cycle? Or is it always a reliable two-press that unlocks the doors with no odd repeating?

The lock mechanisms on these cars can be tricky. I sort of wish they didn't have keyless entry so we wouldn't be facing these electrical issues today! Good luck with your investigation.

Charge your battery overnight and see if that helps. Might just be a weak battery. It worked on one of my past XJ's.

Mine happens the same occasionally, but maybe cycle three times rather than five. My key remote is not in use so I simply use the transponder key. It often occurs when someone tries to open the door before I fully unlock the door, or when the key does not turn fully well, and electric locks are sensitive and I would not consider this an issue. However, I have see other X300s with a very sticky door locks, which may cause trouble, especially when the car battery is weak.

Default Door maintenance time!

I bet it it's the guts of my doors.
Time to tear them apart and lube everything up correctly.

Thanks for the ideas!

It's a sticking microswitch in the drivers door actuator. I tried all sorts of things to fix it and in the end replacing the lock actuator was the only fix.

For a LHD car is looks like the part number is GNA1081BK, after many supercessions.

Default WOWSER! Costly little fix

The latch seems to be anywhere fro $260 to $450 depending on source.

Time to start keeping an eye out at the local junk yards.

Mine started doing the X5 after replacing the cable. I agree it's a microswitch but I might do more harm than good if I take the lock apart, so I'm leaving it.

I believe you are correct. My New To Me 97 X300 with a Battery that is 4 to 5 years old. Just started the x3 -5 Actuating Lock's And I have a series of Beeps as well as a strange AC display going off when I turn my head lights on. All This after I had a Sub Woofer and Amp installed. I theorize that the old Battery Got pushed over the edge after the Amp[ Install. At Least this is what I am leaning towards. I will Install New Battery and see where I stand afterwards.

When I bought my car it had a key fob. Gradually got worse and worse and eventually stopped working. So now I use the one key I have (which is slightly bent for some reason!) to unlock and lock the car. When I lock it, it does the same thing and then a nice BEEP! as I about get to my front door. Just got used to it now!!! Did buy a used fob off ebay - total waste of money, didn't work, couldn't program it. I reckon I could walk to my car with a blindfold now and get the key perfectly into the door lock in one hit!!!

Hope you fix yours ( on my list .....)

When I upgraded my door speakers, mine did exactly this. Cycled every time it locked. Turned out that I hadn’t quite aligned the door card on the top of the door and it was catching on the pop up door lock. Not enough to stop it going up and down, but must have been enough resistance to make it check itself.

Once I aligned the door card properly (wasn’t hooked over the window lip), it fixed it immediately.

Its worth checking the door cards, see if they are on properly, and if so, I’d be taking them off and lubing the lock mechanisms inside the door as it sounds like something it catching or jamming slightly.

good luck
