Unhappy 'Minor' Peeling Clear Coat

Hey Everybody,
Well it's happened. My beloved Jaguar has shed some of her skin over the past few weeks. There are about three "minor spots", minor being an inch wide and 4 inches long - enough to drive me (OCD FREAK) crazy! One on the hood and two on the rear passenger fender.

The clear coat has come off, exposing the 'paint/base?' below. Is there absolutely anyway to repair this without having to get a repaint? Could the clear be feathered and reapplied in these areas?

If I were to get the entire car repainted, could anybody share what they've paid in the past. I really don't think an entire paint job would be wise, considering it would most likely cost more than the value of the car - but would be interesting to hear what any of you guys have paid!

Any input would be greatly appreciated, these wounds need to be mended!

****I'll post some photos of the damage tomorrow****

Thanks a lot!

Hi Holybananas,

After giving my x300 its frst wash I noticed this on the top left of the bonnet\hood.

I dont think a full bonnet\hood respray is in order, as most paintshops would want to take it to bare metal to respray it properly.

Not that Im a paintshop man, but I think it could be prepped and then blended in.

Keep us in the loop as to how you get on....

Here's a picture of the peeling on the rear passenger fender. It looks worse in the picture, I'm starting to just get used to it in person but I'd still like to get it repaired if possible .

Obviuosly when chamoising it when washing it aggitates it as well.

Perhaps a post is needed in the bodywork forum section where there may be a bodywork guy lurking

Thankfully (touch wood) my x300 is mechanically sound and the biggest issue with it, is the peeling in various places. It really takes away from the look of the car and will be seriously addressed when the weather improves. What I have noticed though, is that the longer the peel remains untreated, the more the colour underneath changes, darkening over time, no doubt due to exposure to the elements. So, I would suggest, if yours has just started to peel, as a preventative measure, it might be no harm to spray over it with some clear, just to seal it, until a full repair is tackled. My car is similar in colour to the one shown in the pics and the peeled spots show up quite clearly as darker paint.

Guys,

Just had 5mins so did a bit of research with

Came up with this from another forum:

"Clear peels because the base coat surface
underneath isn't providing good adhesion, possibly due to poor
preparation, or a bad formulation of clear paint. Since the whole car
is painted at once at the factory, if the clear itself was the
problem, the whole car would be peeling. I had a Mitsubishi that had
a repair to one wing when it was new. Six years later, that wing
started to peel clear. I took it back to the shop that did the work
and they removed the clear (with a product called, appropriately
enough, "peeler") and re-shot the panel."

Hope it helps someone
