"Missing" on start-up, air flow meter, ?water in fuel.
I feel that everytime I post, it comes across as a whinge, but I am just sharing problems that may help someone else down the line..
I have had my XJR about 2 1/4 years now, and done nearly 30,000 miles despite the time it has been in the mechanic's. It had a new 'generic' non-genuine air flow meter (AFM) 2 years ago, as the XJR-specific Lucas AFMs are unobtanium. I bought one of those unbranded $99.99 AFMs off the net, and it worked well until now.
The car has never been going better until this week. We had a cyclone pass right over the North Island of NZ which smashed trees, and blew some crap under my fuel filler flap. Then we had sudden torrential rain 4 days ago, after which the Jag developed a misfire at start-up which exactly replicated water in the fuel. It would then clear, and be fine, and did the ton the other night. I tried a full tank of gas with 1/2 a litre of methylated spirits to try to dissolve the suspected water - no help. Then yesterday the car conked out completely. Towed to my mechanic who hooked up the diagnostic beastie, and the AFM was putting out no data. He swapped on an old Lucas XJR AFM (LNA1620AA) that I keep in the boot/trunk, and it sorted it. No Water in Tank!
So happy motoring again.
I will order another of these generic non-genuine AFMs because they work fine, at least for 2 years!
