Default Need Help identifying this noise

I have a "clicking" sound coming from my dashboard behind the center vents and the radio area. It is intermittent but loud and sounds like something trying to actuate or switch back and forth. I don't want to tear the dash apart without knowing what it is. Seems to do it a lot on startup and then usually subsides after driving awhile. I searched the forum and didn't find anything that seem relevant but, don't know what to ask. Anyone have experience or an idea what it might be? Something to do with the HYVAC system is my best guess so far.....

Hi crvols,

My first guess would be that a control module or relay has become noisy or a relay may not be latching properly. For example, the Gearshift Interlock relay and the Keylock relay are mounted under the ski slope a little above and to the right of the gear selector lever. Several control modules are in the general vicinity you describe, like the Body Processor Module (BPM), mounted just to the right of the center console, as is the Air Conditioning Control Module (ACCM). Another possibility that comes to mind: could the cassette player be mistakenly trying to load a cassette?

There are diagrams shown the relay and control module locations in the Electrical Guide, which you can download at the link below, courtesy of Gus and his website, jagrepair.com.

Cheers,

Don

You might want to try removing certain fuses pertaining to the circuits that Don mentioned above. If you don't here the clicking, then you can proceed to check into that circuit.

Thanks for those suggestions. Did not realize there were so many relays and that sounds like what I am hearing. Will follow up when I figure it out.

I think it may be the tape deck trying to load. Makes me feel dumb but, trying to listen with your head by the tape deck while driving is dumber!

You can try pinpointing the noise by placing a long screwdriver up to the suspecting area and the other end to your ear, using it as a stethescope. Just don't make any sharp turns while doing so! ;-)

Default I have that noise too, sounds like air conditioning duct controls cycling

I will try the fuse idea, but suspect I have to open up the dash to find it?

That's the interlock that won't let you move the lever out of park if you're foot isn't on the brake.

Ordered a couple of switch's from England and installed. It was fairly straight forward except getting the rivets out was a pain. I won't go into why on a $55K car a $2 switch is riveted like a plane fuselage!) The new switch is smaller and I secured it with micro screws and nuts future removal. Just remove the switch and solder the wires to the new one. Thanks to Tcasmarcus for helping to identify this annoyance!

New micro switch installed.

Great! Do you have a link to where you bought the switch or the parts number? I might do the same, but mine got better after having cleaned it properly.

Yes, I bought Y4T6Y-1884 (DIAL0050494) from Dial Electronics Ltd. In England. Contact them at: enquiries@buy-transistors.com they were about $15 for two with shipping. Since I bought two and one is all I need at present, if you want to send me a self addressed envelope I will give you my spare for the help you have provided. Just PM me if you are interested.

Thank you for the offer😊 But don't worry about it. It might be easier just order from the UK for me. Glad you sorted it out though , the click is unbearable once you start thinking about it.
