Default New old user with new old XJ6 Sport! - and a few questions :D

Hi there!

I decided to replace my Volvo C30 with an XJ6 Sport... Loving the looks and style but some things need replacing or at least an "overhaul". The headliner is hanging a tad, but nothing wild. Nothing urgent.

Before someone says anything, yes, I know, the XJ6 is a cruiser and no bruiser... But I'd like to lower it. It already is I think 7 mm lower (from factory as it is a "Sport"). But I'd like it a tad lower. Has anyone had any experience with some lowering springs? If so, what ones? All I can find are H&R...

The boot/trunk switch doesn't seem to work. Is it a common problem or is there something which can cause it to fail to work (cracked wires???)?

Otherwise the car is great. Love it to bits! Here a few pics (don't be surprised, we have a few cars and the drive is getting more Jags in it ):

Welcome back.
The headliner is a DIY replacement if you are so inclined. Use the search to find some threads with photos.
The trunk lid is often due to a broken wire in the hinge area.

I like it!

Lowering: one thing that needs to be discussed is that the X300s have preset, non-adjustable camber. This might be a problem if you lower the suspension

Well, not really welcome back I'm more active in the XJ-S section as my other car is - as seen in the pictures - an XJ-S But thanks

Headliner is an easy job. The trunk/boot is more my issue. Mostly a broken wire you say... Is the hinge easy to access or a PITA?

Cheers Doug! I like it too It is "only" the base 3.2l Sport but enough for my daily needs The lowering issues you state are quite common nowadays. My C30 had a totally inadjustable camber. Only way to do something was to buy different camber arms. I never did and had a really bad negative camber at the rear (though with in the Volvo specs).

The wire harness alongside the right side hinge is the place to start.

Tried it today... Held the button a tad longer and e voila... It opens. So that is fine...

Ah hah, see, I knew some of the XJR/Sport interiors had the rear cigar lighter stock!

You can see my quest to find that part here:

Also, should all X300s have that "tool kit" under the engine compartment fuse block door? I don't have one of those kits (USA spec XJR). Is mine lost, or did NA/USA spec cars never have that kit?

.... another Jaguar mystery

Although humorously, not really sure what that assortment of bulbs and "tools" is really supposed to accomplish other than just that, changing a fuse/bulb

Sharp looking car BTW!

Just proves....whenever you say something in absolute terms an exception always comes along! I should know better

Might be fun to hear from others on this

The Sport (in our market at least) didn't come with the tool kit. As I'm sure many other owners have done, I've put together what I believe to be a more useful kit than the stock Jaguar issue and it fits snuggly in the cubby.

Re the boot switch, does the boot release ok from the switch in the dash? If so, the most likely culprit is the microswitch behind the button on the boot lid. The dealers sold "dozens" of these button/switch assemblies back in the day, and they are still available new for £65 ish. ebay has used ones between £10 and £20, but if you can use a soldering iron, replace just the microswitch, which is a common microswitch size. A very simple job, and very obvious what to do when you have the button off the bootlid, which is a 15 minute job. Cost me £2.49 from Maplins for the switch.
If the dashboard switch doesn't release the bootlid, it may point to a wiring fault at the hinge, but I bet it does work.

All works again mate... The dash switch as well as the boot switch. I just didn't press the switch long enough

What? No sport button on the Sport model? I like the growler button though.

Did Sports always come with the PowerLok LSD the XJR did?

I drive my XJ6 in a very sporty manner, I have to wonder what the LSD feels like going back and forth on tight turns.

Great pics. Adding those to my screen saver.

No sport button, because it is the "low end" ZF tranny. No electrical operations in it... If it was the 4.0l it would have it (I have been told).

I haven't had a chance to test if it has an LSD. Would be nice if it did

My XJ6 4.0 litre had an amusing oversteer trait in stock trim. Yours likely much tighter, so while we both get beaten by newer Toyota Camry V6 in a straight line, you can still have lots of fun taking turns quickly.

Well then... It's totaled... Hit a patch of ice at a lower speed (~45 kmh so about 30 mph), spun left, spun right and slid into a garden killing a street sign, some trees and ended up smashing into a tree with my drivers door...
