Talking new owner x-300

I have achieved my dream of owning 2 of the finest driving cars in the world IMHO, a 1988 XJ-S coupe, and today, a 1995 XJ-6, 4.0L Flamenco red pearl in color. Any tips or lookouts for the XJ-6 would be appreciated. It has 82,000 miles and drives very well. Thanks

I drove an '88 XJS for years. Man, what a car !

Just drive your X300 and perform all the typical routine services: fluids, lubricants, filters, etc. There are some common failure points on X300s but there isn't much you can do to prevent them. Drive it, enjoy, and when a problem comes up, fix it :-)

A few common issues:

Clock and radio displays go on the fritz
Radio/CD player failures
Rear wheel bearing noise/failure
Dirty throttle body (high idle)
Thermostat stuck open (no heat)
Seat memory feature goes wonky (who cares?)
Tilt/travel cables break on steering column
Suspension bushings/suspension noise (usually after 100k miles)

Cheers
DD

Cupholder doesn't (keep a hand on it for even mild acceleration or turns) and hinges are prone to break

Oil pressure transducer is unreliable and drives both the light and the guage. One fine day you may see the guage flutter, drop to zero, and the light then comes on...particularly at idle. There is a kit consisting of an oil press switch, jumper harness w/resistor and supposedly you are supposed to have dealer reprogram the inst. pack. If you just install the $50 kit, guage will park at about 47 psi, indicating you've got at least 8. I've been running it over a month since the change and have yet to see the utility in reprogramming the inst panel - maybe that puts you at 40, the exact middle of the guage, who knows?

Headliners are prone to sag.

ABS modules have a weak point but are repairable

Secondary Air system will light the chk-eng ....curiously on hot-starts when that system is only supposed to be active on cold-starts

Clearcoat prone to peel on horizontal surfaces, particularly bonnet-n-boot lids.

That's all I can think to add to the above...fortunately I've only got a few of these maladies, but did notice some combination thereof on the many XJ's I looked at/drove in my 3 mo. search for my jewel. Fantastic cars. Enjoy it.

Welcome to the x300 club, I also have a 1995 xj6 and your right it is a great car. Like has been said---drive it and fix it. Great that yours only has 82,000 miles. The electrics are of course complicated and can be temperamental, but this forum is a great resource and you will find some great help here.--------Scott
