Default Odb p0413

My X300 3.2 runs OK for a while and then won't pull or rev but will tootle along OK.

I bought an ODB scanner and it reports one error

P0413 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open

Any idea what I should be looking for?

One tailpipe has more condensation coming out than the other when cold if that helps.

I did try a forum search but to no avail, I suspect this is something you experienced guys will recognise.

Many thanks

Mike

I'd start off by checking the secondary air injection relay in the engine bay.

The right front of the engine bay.

Remove this plastic cover

The AIR relay is the one in the middle of the threesome.

If you don't already have it, go to the downloads post at the top of this forum and download the electrical guide for your car. It's free and invaluable. It also has the locations of all the relays, fuses and other electrical components.

Are we sure UK vehicles have air pumps (secondary air injection)???

+1 Allan. Also, perhaps the connector at the air pump is bad, causing an open circuit, and/or the pump is leaking air and causing ECU confusion with the air/fuel mixture. Check that connector (and the air hose connections) on the pump.

I'm pretty sure UK spec does not have this pump. Where would I find it?

I cleared the code and it has not returned although as I recall a P1621 has turned up which is something about the security code not matching or the main computer being bust which I hope it isn't!

Having just looked in the boot/trunk there are two large slab like things in and near the fuse box. What in the world are they?

Ah, didn't spot you were in Blighty, so no air pump there methinks.

P1621 is just a line check for the input voltage to the ECM. Might just be a glitch or perhaps if you have been disconnecting and reconnecting the battery the ECM sensed a problem. I would just erase it and see if it stays off.

Could you be more specific or post a pic?

The unit in the fuse box is the rear lamp control module/bulb failure unit. It should be marked on the label and easily read?

Not sure about the second one by the battery. Perhaps something aftermarket like and alarm controller or phone module?

I didn't like to move them! That's one big control unit.

I think you are right, there is a little phone aerial on the window so a phone unit would make sense.
