Oil filter size?

Oil filter size?
I picked up the supplies needed to change my oil and filter and when I got home and looked at the filter in my car I noticed the one I just bought is about 1/3 smaller in size. I called the store and they confirmed that the thread and O ring size are the same, it's just the diameter is different. Will this cause any problems?

Since you are up there and I am down here, what I got may be totally useless, but here goes, just because.
I use a Z133 (Crossland) filter on the X300, all the V12's, and S3 6cyl. It is a Ryco part number, BUT, is also used as an "industry standard". Sooooo, any parts mob of any integrity "should" be able to cross reference that number to whatever it is they use.
The guy is "correct" as in the thread and seal dimensions comment, and I have noticed over the last 20 odd years the Crossland have got a tad shorter, which is good on the V12's.
I have looked (joys of working in aftermarket spare parts) for a filter that will substitute for the Z133, and NO LUCK, that thread and seal spec is Jag only.

I've seen this filter shrinkage many times. I've never heard of an actual problem resulting although a bit less filtering might be expected....but even then the filtering ability isn't necessarily 100% dependant on physical size.
If you wanna go with the standard (bigger) size, try AC Delco PF964, Bosch 72147, Jaguar EBC9658. I'm sure there are others.
Cheers

There are short filters and there are long filters, and plenty of long vs short discussions online of you google it. Long filters have more filter paper and have a larger oil capacity. People seem to feel that long filters filter better and flow better because of the additional paper and capacity, but the difference is probably marginal. I have a short one on there now. I'll put a long one on next filter change for piece of mind, as there's no real evidence that I've seen. So don't sweat it too much. I use MANN brand oil filters and oddly enough, the long filter was a dollar or two cheaper than the short when I bought it online. It has an attached o-ring also. If nothing else, the long filter is a little easier to get your hands around to attach to or remove from the engine.
