Hello, all! I am working with a local company to create a bespoke replacement solution for the flywheel and clutch on the XJR-6. I know there were not a lot of these cars made, let alone in manual, but I figure if there are any left, those owners will be around here!
My end goal is to have a direct replacement flywheel with a replaceable friction surface that accepts a clutch kit that can be ordered "off-the-shelf".
I currently have a dual mass OEM flywheel in my possession, as well as the AJ16S engine and a Getrag 290 5-speed transmission. Long story short, I took a bunch of measurements this evening and will be returning to the shop tomorrow with the trans, flywheel, and adapter plate to get this project started.
From what we can tell, it looks like the starter ring can be pressed off the old flywheel and onto the new one. If not, I will be looking into finding a starter & starting ring combo that will work on this setup, as the Jaguar teeth are unique, and trying to recreate it would drive the cost way up.
That said, the end product is likely to be a flywheel without a starter ring, and is estimated to be about $850 USD. The price of the clutch is TBD depending on what we can find to fit, but it should be in line with most OEM clutch kit replacement costs.
How many, if any, would be interested in the chance to purchase these parts? (The shop says that it'll start to get cheaper in the 5-10 qty. range)
When mine goes capote, I would be interested but it's a fairly recent install so I don't see myself purchasing a new one for a good little while. Would be interested in your solution when the time comes. Good luck
Updates! I have my new flywheel and clutch in hand, and it is a GORGEOUS package! See for yourself:
The pricing I talked about in my first post changed quite a bit, because the tech and I discussed several options and versions of how to get this project done. To put it plain and simple: we created a complete replacement package that leaves no guess work or extra bits to worry about.
Aluminum, single piece flywheel with serviceable friction surface and removable pilot bearing (a fully serviceable piece!) which utilizes the OEM ring gear.
Custom single-disc clutch package with cover bolts.
Custom hydraulic pusher slave with custom throw-out bearing
Shortened flywheel bolts.
Stainless Steel braided lines off the slave cylinder.
Shims.
The whole package is good to 525hp.
The big question, of course: $2,700 USD
I couldn't be happier with the setup, especially knowing that servicing the kit in the future will be MUCH cheaper than buying all new kit each time it wears beyond it's limits (and I won't have to worry about a supplier running out of stock on a part no longer made).
I cannot wait to get this project put together so I can tell you all how it drives!
I could only assume so. That mechanism with the large arm that reaches across the whole trans was... quite a design. Not sure about refined, though; this is a single piece flywheel in place of the OEM dual mass, so it'll definitely be a little "sportier".
