Power steering fluid
Anyone know what kind of power steering fluid my 96 XJ6 takes. I know Dextron lll ATF is recommended, but is that compatible with whatever the car came with, OEM type ? Thanks
The car came with Dexron in the power steering. If you can't find Dex III you can use any of the more modern Dexron designations (I think we're up to Dexron V or VI nowadays).
That said, I really don't think the power steering system is particularly sensitive. In my years of X300 ownership I used Dexron, Dexron/Mercon, Type F, Type FA...whatever was closest to hand...in my power steering and it always worked fine.
Cheers

Thanks Doug, I've been reading different reply's on different forums for days, it does seem like Dextron lll or IV is the fluid of choice. I'm going to change the fluid via a baster in my 96 Jag, I've been doing it for years to my 04 Cavalier , that also uses a electric PS pump, using AC Delco PS fluid, that's clear color. Looking @ the Jaguar's OEM Fluid it also looks like it "was" clear at one time. I believe standard Dextron III ATF is red. That's where all my confusion lies, red, clear, ATF, clear PS fluid. Bottom line is the ZF steering always worked great, just time for a fluid change & just want to be sure the right fluid is being used.
