I'm replacing my power steering pump soon and I'm confused about the type of power steering fluid that I need. The owner's manual says to use Dextron III but I can't find any Dextron III power steering fluid, only tranny fluid. I talked to the local O'Reilly's guys about it and they told me that "any of the power steering fluids should be fine". Are they right? If not, what's the correct fluid to use?

 

I think the actual spec is ESSO 320 ... now Mobil 320 ....... If you get it from the dealer. It has been a long time since I have had to get any

Power steering fluid is not correct.

If you cannot find Dexron III, then find ATF that is Dexron III compatible.

One example is Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc available at any Walmart:

I use Dexron III ATF from NAPA.

 

Similar to the old Mercury cars. My 70 Cougar uses Type F trans fluid in both the trans and power steering.
