Random stalling, no codes?

Random stalling, no codes?
Hello everyone,
I own a 1996 XJ6 U.S. model. Just recently, it began acting funny. My wife was on the expressway with it and the engine died/stalled, and the transmission warning light lit up.
Later that evening, I went to pick it up from the side of the road. It ran fine for about half an hour, then it started to stall randomly, which increased little by little over the next hour of running, to the point that it was doing it often enough that we could drive around the block and make it happen.
There is no code. The engine just kind of dies, like if it had no spark or fuel . . then it comes back to life, and as long as the car was still moving, the momentum of the car keeps the engine running. If the engine dies while stationary, I just have to turn the key. But no check engine light.
I've had ignition coils fail before, and when that happened I got a code for a misfire on a particular cylinder. No codes this time.
I've heard about the crank position sensors going bad. Does my problem sound like a crank sensor?
Are there any relays -- fuel pump, ECU, etc. -- that are known to fail and cause this kind of behavior?
Any/all advice is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony K.

I'm in the middle of the very same problem for the past 2-3 months now. 1996 XJR. It started like yours does. Stalling at stop signs. Takes 2-3 cranks to start up again. Engine light stayed on for the past month since AUG/1/12. a week ago I hooked up the tester and it read Code P1775 (Transmission something). After I pulled out the connector and ut away the tester the Eng light went off and it has been off for a week.
However, just a bit like yours. I would be driving at regular Highway speed and I can feel the engine cut-off silently and I roll to a full stop. I sit for a few minutes andit starts after 1,2, 3 tries and I go for another week or so. It happens at the most in-opportune times. Like going thru a busy tunnel in rush hour and coming off a long overpass bridge also in rush hour. So far it has started every time in a few cranks.
My two mecahnics can not figure it out. We've also had a code P1791 Throttle position sensor, but that is an $800.00 tiny little part and they are not convinve that is the real problem. We are leaning towards some kind of Electrical power failure. It does not seem to be gas releated, because it no longer chug, chug or rough idles before it does the stall. It just goes silent (like turning off a light switch). I'll be taking it in later in SEP to a Jag specialist for an analysis. I'll keep this post updated with any results.
Sorry to hear about your frustrated problem.

Hi Tony,
I remember when I had a X300 4L sport the same thing happened to me, engine just died with no warning. Turned out to be the airflow meter. Quite an expensive fix from Jaguar unless you can find a cheaper alternative.
Next time it happens try disconnecting the airfow meter and restarting the engine, though not advised for long running as it can have adverse effect on the Cats.
Just a thought.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies.
I went ahead and replaced the crank position sensor, and it cured the issue . . .
. . . only problem is now it idles high, like 1500-2000 rpm, and when I am on the expressway and put the pedal down, it hesitates mildly.
After installing a new crank sensor, is there some procedure that needs to be done, like flashing the ECU, or resetting something?
Thanks,
Tony
