Rattling/Ticking from console
After installing ceramic brake pads today I took the car for a test ride with the radio off and the windows down to make sure I didn't hear any unwanted noises. While the brakes were fine, I noticed a really annoying rattling coming from under the ash tray and console. I opened the ash tray looking for something rattling around in there and realized it was coming from under that area. It is just as noticable in reverse but the car runs and shifts beautifully and it stops when I put it in Park. It's a 96 VDP with only 28K. Anyone know what this could be?
OK, read it a few times so as not to miss something.
I am gathering from your "its under that area" to mean it is under the ashtray area and outside the cabin???????.
If that is so,
1) I would stab at an exhaust heat shield rattling around.
2) The trans cable going from the J gate to the trans on the LH side is rattling on something.
3) The electrical loom for the trans (LH side also I believe) is rattling on something.
Or it could be all 3.

+1 on the heat shield idea

Thanks for the input guys. All three scenario's sound possible. I thought possible heat shield but last time I had that scenario on one of my other vehicles I could hear it at start up also.Sorry, the noise is definitely in the cabin. I also forgot to mention I could still hear it when shifting into neutral on a down hill.
Shouldn't take but a few hours to find then :-)
Heh heh. I spent hours fixing a noise in the console that turned out to be the tweeter speaker rattilng in the A-pillar !

There are 2 plastic wingnuts just to the left & right of the "sport mode" switch which secure the wood facia that surrounds the shifter/stereo/climate control (better known as the 'ski slope') Check that both of those wingnuts are securely tightened. If they are loose, the 2 metal stud screws they attach to can rattle.
