Relay clunking

Relay clunking
I have a problem with my 95 X300 (XJ6). In the area somewhere just forward of the steering wheel column there is a relay that now and then chatters. It is very erratic as far as when it decides to do this clunking. I can actually feel it a little bit when my hand is on the bottom of the steering wheel. It does not seem to effect any function in the car and has been doing this for several years. It won't do it for a while and then if I do hard braking it will start up again. Sometimes it does it when I start up in the morning. And only does this clunking for a short time or series of short times. Never of any long duration so I could go into this area and locate the darn thing.
My thought is that I might have a connector loose causing the problem. I just thought I would put forward this problem and see if any of you have had this happen before I tear into this area.
Thanks
EZ

only had mine since end of August but have experienced this from time-to-time. Just as puzzled as you are by it. For me, I had the idea it may be climate-control related as I've only experienced it when ambient air and cabin set-points are pretty close together. Not always then, but anytime it has happened, those have been the conditions. Apart from that, my experience, like yours, is that it seems a completely random occurrence.

Thanks for all the response. When I describe hard braking it is not near hard enough to activate the ABS. It is like what you do when the light suddenly changes to red at the intersection. The clunking happens as you drive along under very normal conditions. Sometimes when slowly picking up speed after leaving an intersection or the driveway. Has nothing to do with the brakes. My thought was that if I had a loose connector the deceleration might move the connector causing random breaks in a circuit.
The idea that it might happen when the outside and inside tempt are near the same and the regulator can't decide what to do is something to look at. When this happens again I will reach over and change the tempt setting.
It doesn't seem to have any effect on any system.
I do hope some one has figured out how to fix this thing. It is very anoying.
