How do I remove the overhead console from my 97 xjr? I've removed the screw in sunglasses compartment but am scared to pull on it in fear of breaking any plastic clips???? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

I googled some pics of (supposedly) the console for your car. It appears to be the same as my '98 XJ8. If so, here's the scoop:
One large plastic "screw" in the sunglass holder.
Then pull straight back on the console, parallel to the roof. It's held by two fairly large sheet metal clips up front, nothing fragile or easily broken.

I had mine off some time ago. After turning the screw (quarter turn if memory serves?) apply gentle pressure and pull back on the unit, then it should come away. There's an multi-connector sitting behind, disconnect it to remove completely. I seem to recall the retaining clips are metal and I didn't feel they would break easily.

 

It's tight, drop the front just a little, and pull towards the back. Getting it back onto the front hooks from the roof during installation is a bit of a treat.
