I run a 174f thermostat with no problems, its held in by two bolts and will take you five min to change.

The factory spec. thermostat is 190 F and I think you will be warmer this winter if you use it. The engine was designed around that operating temperature. People in hot climates with supercharged cars sometimes run a colder thermostat.

yup, it takes about 5 minutes to change. Just make sure, if you buy one and it comes with some sort of o-ring, don't put it in the groove! And when tightening the bolts back, make sure you do it gently and evenly, otherwise you'll crack the casing... I did it, but the I fixed it with some 2-part epoxy glue for metal, so far it's been half a year and still no leaks

I couldn't find the metal gasket anywhere, and mine leaked when I reassembled it. I bought a roll of "make your own gasket" material from the auto parts store and I traced the original. It's perfect now.

front of the engine, you see that big pipe going from engine towards radiator? And there's that metal bend and then it connects to the rubber hose, well, that bend is the thermostat housing. Held by 2 bolts, size 10mm (although it might have been 13mm, not really sure right now) if I remember correct.

What's wrong with the o-ring?
I want to change the thermostat in my '96 4.0 to see if that the reason for the temp gauge rarely rising above C .
I ordered a thermostat which did not come with either a gasket or an o-ring. A gasket would be for the housing; an o-ring would be for the thermostat itself, correct?
It seems like some folks on the forums are suggesting to just use gasket sealer after seriously cleaning the mating surfaces, correct?
