Scratch Sound when starting on x300?? 1996
After I start my car I get a scratch type sound. It only happeneds when I start the car. AS SOON AS I TURN THE KEY AND IT STARTS THE SOUND HAPPENEDS AT THE END OF THE START. I was told that it was the chain tensioner, I had that done a few months back. The noise went away, but recently started coming back again. Anyone? thanks.

That neighbours CAT trying to out of the engine bay.
SORRY just could NOT resist that one.
Nearly finished the resto on the P3 Rover, so maybe the sanity will return, bugga, I hope not.
Reading VERY carefully what you have written, helps me a lot.
IF that noise was there before, and the top tensioner "fixed" it for a short time, it is identical to mine, mmmm.
I then proceeded to remove the timing cover and replaced EVERY damper/blade/guide in there, along with 2 new chains, and lower tensioner piston assembly. ALL my dampers etc were delaminated, or so close as not to matter.
That was 1 year ago, and about 20k kms, and it is SILENT.
SO, I reckon front cover surgery is called for. NOT hard, quite time consuming, and not that expensive. Mine was about $200 for the parts, 1 bottle of JD, and 1 good days labour (free).
