Selling my Jaguar
Hello
I have a great looking 1997 Jaguar XJ6 with only 62,000 miles on it. I have an airbag fault problem which shows up on the dash. It would be about a $1100 repair job if I used used parts. Rather than fool around with the repair I am planning on taking $1000 off my price and selling it "as is". The Kelly Blue Book "Excellent" price is $8100-----so I would ask $7000. Doesn't seem like much for such a great car that originally cost around $70,000.
Anyways, I am wondering if selling it as is will make it a lot harder to sell---or will someone look at it as a bargain and pay the $7000.

I bought my wifes 97, XJ6L with 60K on it one year ago for $6000 with absolutely no issues AND impeccable condition inside/out/under boot and under bonnet....no matter how you slice it the original MSRP when it comes to Jaguars vs it's value today is pennies on the dollar unless your talking E-Types and XK150/40/20's for the most part....XJ6's and XJS's = pennies on the dollar. In other words you threw it out there for comment so mine would be $7000 is not a bargain especially with the airbag light.

I'm afraid I have to agree. $7000 seems a stretch these days....even *without* the air bag problem. For that money the car better be exceptional in every respect.
But, regardless of price, yes, it would be harder to sell with an airbag problem. Most people are a bit afraid of Jaguars to begin with. A warning light glaring at them would do absolutely nothing to assuage their anxiety .
A DIY person who knows and likes Jags might be more interested as he'll know that the problem *might* be a relatively simple fix. But, that person will also know that $7000 is probably too much.

Best of luck with it Darrol. I'd have to agree with JT. I bought my 95 VDP in 2010 with 63k on it - a two-owner Texas car living in a climate-controlled garage alongside a later model XJR - thus the reason it was offered for sale. After more or less stumbling into ownership of a couple of S-types to satisfy a couple of important women in my life, I researched and specifically targeted the X300 as the Jag for me. I looked at a BUNCH! of $3k offerings with various problems and after tallying up the fixes, each came to somewhere between $6k-$7k total investment to get to the condition I wanted them. So, when a friend tipped me off to the availability of this stunning black VDP, and the seller graciously accepted my $6.5K offer, I was jazzed. But the experience (about a 6-mo hunt) convinced me that, to me, anyway, the X300 in perfect condition is worth (in 2010) somewhere between $6K and $7k. I may still go that high for one in 3-5 yrs if mine becomes totally worn out or otherwise taken out of service. But it is the most desireable car for me, only an X308 Super V-8 comes close on the want-it meter and I still can't help thinking I'm in an S-Type in those. So I suspect I value them higher than the market in-general does.

Please get the Airbag light fixed before you sell.
Two reasons:
1. if you do - you'll find it easier to sell and not take a huge hit on price
2. if you don't - the buyer will soon be here as a newbie asking how to fix it
Joking aside, any Jaguar with a warning light on is going to be hard to sell. I've had two models now with Airbag system faults and would prefer to rebuild an engine or transmission any day rather than troubleshoot the SRS. It can get very expensive.

I agree with all the valuation advice above. I bought a same-year XJR with fewer miles for less.
One more good reason to fix the airbag fault before selling it: liability. I'd consider potential failure of safety equipment to be a pretty deal, and saving yourself $1,000 now and taking on potential contingent headaches down the road is picking up nickles in front of a bulldozer.

Yup, if you've done plenty of shopping around and/or spent some time owning/repairing a Jag you know that an exceptional example is worth a premium price.
But exceptional examples are just that. Exceptional.

I paid $2000 for my my 97vdp with 90,000 miles a few months ago. The only thing it needs is a paint job and a new track in the sunroof.
if I was you and didn't want to mess with the airbag issue. List it for $5,500 and take the first $5000. But as others have said fix the airbag issue, if anything it would help you sell it faster.

Indeed.
I had an airbag warning light on my XJR. A $40 used control module from Ebay and 30 minutes labor solved the problem. It was purely a guess but it paid off. And only a $40 loss if it didn't fix the problem.
I mentioned this to Darrol in a different thread but...... ?

Price varies with market
In Detroit, $7K would be high for a 96 in any condition. A comparable vehicle there may be a Cadillac Seville or Lincoln.
Even in California $7K for a 96 would be a gift.
I think $5K with the light showing is optimistic as well.
I looked at a nice 96 VDP with about 90K on it, but it had a ABS light on. As we all know, that could be a dirty sensor, but I figured it was indicative of an uncaring owner --- who knew what else could be wrong. I later found out the guy had to dump it at $3K. That was almost 2 years ago.
