Default Shocks/replacement

Any of you guys got any good tricks/tips on how to tell if shocks need to be replaced?
Of course I know a rough ride is a good indicator, but this car is new to me so I am not certain how it should feel. Plus with it being the "R" version I don't expect it to ride like a VDP.

jump on the front & back of your car and see how many times it bounces.

shouldn't bounce more than 2 or three times,
and also, fluid leaking from any shock is a dead giveaway.
