Default Squeaky Pete (Car's New Name)

Hey Everybody,
When I start my car for the day it will squeak quite loudly while in PARK/DRIVE, however once you put the car in reverse the squeaking goes away, move it back to park/drive it comes back. Once the car is fully warmed up there will be no squeaking. Any ideas what this could be? Would new belts fix the problem or could it be the alternator going?

I have an idea of the exact location where the squeaking is coming from. I've attached a picture of that location. It's 11:30 PM here and dark outside so it was hard to take a picture - but when you look at the picture it's NOT the pully system in focus to the right. if you look a little to the left, it's the out of focus one where 2 of the belts are going (if that makes sense...). These are located at the front end of the car.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm going to take it to the local mechanic this week anyway to get it checked out!

Mine '93 did this problem the chances are you may need to replace the belt ,a loose pulley , a loose / dirty belt or pulley assembly .
You can also squirt WD40 onto the belt with the engine is off but that's not an exact solution .I sprayed WD40 but that noise came back after a while

My guess would be one of the pulleys, either idler or tensioner. The trick is figuring out which one.

After checking for reasonably correct tension, then if that is correct I would probably put a new belt on and see if it makes a difference.

At the end of the day you have nothing to lose because if it is the alternator then you would be putting a new belt on anyway.

Have you checked your steering fluid etc?

AFAIK squeaks come from the old-type V belts, not the modern grooved flat ones, but I might be wrong. As the belt wears it moves down into the V of the pulley until it bottoms, but the exact mechanism of squeak is not really known, but new belts usually cure the problem, unless the pulley itself is worn-out too. Try spraying a bit of water onto the belt you think is causing the noise to see what happens. If it goes quiet - QED !
