strange park lock problem
Hi All,
My '96 VDP has an intermittent bad habit. Most of the time all is well with the park lock thing. But sometimes when I push on the brake pedal to shift out of park nothing happens. Sometimes with my foot still on the brake the park lock with release after 30-60 seconds or so. Sometimes it will release if I push harder on the brake. If the engine has been running for a minute or so it always releases when I push the brake.
I'm familiar with the switch on the brake pedal and replaced that one time on another X-300 I have. But it was not intermittent.
Also familiar with under the ski slope. I've been in there many times messing with the radio, clock, etc.
I have not been able to sleuth out the problem b/c of it's being intermittent.
Any ideas out there?
Many thanks.

My "poverty pack" XJ6 did that when I first got it.
Caught me up a few times, so much so, that the small access plug was permanently removed.
Looked and tested to my exhaustion.
Being the "Grumpy old man" that I am, I simply removed the solenoid and its linkage. I am WELL AWARE of the reason that thing is their, so NO flame suit is on.
It is on the shelf in the shed, and will be refitted when and if I sell the car.

I had the same thing, it was intermittent although gradually happening more often. A replacement brake light switch fixed it. Easiest way to tell is to see if the brake lights come on when you press the pedal. If no lights coincide with no shift (no interlock "click") then I'll bet it's the brake light switch. If you have brake lights but no shift, more likely to be the interlock solenoid.
