suspension upgrades for xj6?
hello everyone,
I have a 95 XJ6 in need of some new shocks, springs, etc.. I was looking at bilsteins. I was wondering if any of you knew if you could do a straight swap of the oem shocks and springs to the XJR bilstein shocks? I figured i would have to get some springs for a XJR and fit them with the new bilsteins. Or if you knew any good springs to go with the bilsteins( i saw H & R made a set for the xj6). Let me know what you think of this or if its a good idea or not. I was hoping to get better than stock shocks and springs since i need new ones anyways.
thanks

OEM was Bilsteins for all of the X300s but there were several variants, with XJR being the most performance oriented.
The XJR/Sport front anti-roll bar would be a good addition, as would the rear anti-roll br fitted to those models
The XJR/Sport springs would bolt right in
Not familiar with aftermarket springs
Cheers

Try SHOX.com. I believe they sell H&R springs for about $319.00...Bilstein sport dampeners are a must to buy. The can deal with the more progressive spring rates. They also bring the car down 1.5 inches...see URL below. Hope this helps.

hello,
i have been wanting to get the a new set of bilstein XJR shocks and fit them to my XJ6 and get some new springs as well. has anyone ever dones this before and had good results? i heard camber could be a issue when using lowering springs since you cant adjust the camber angle. i was hoping to find a set of oem XJR springs as well. does anyone know if this upgrade is possible? Also if it is possible where to get a good set of springs. any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

BTW rockauto shows that the shocks are the same for xj6 and xjr

Only because the brands they sell don't offer the XJR-specific variant. Jaguar used four or five different variants when bulding the X300s but aftermarket suppliers only offer one or two.

In terms of part numbers?
Road Spring and Damper-Front - Parts for XJ Series from (V)720125 to (V)812255 (X300) | Jaguar Classic Parts UK
6 cyl Comfort - MMD2140AC
XJ12 Sport - MMD2140BC
6 cyl Sport and XJ12 Comfort - MMD2140CC
XJR - MNA2140AC
Sport suspension came standard on the XJ Sport model and as an option on the XJ6 and Sovereign models. I'm not sure how you tell the shocks apart from the outside - they are supposed to have coloured marks, but mine were so rusty you couldn't tell.

For years the green Bilsteins were the "sport" type...my XJR has greenies...but I'm not sure that's a 100% definitive way of determining what you have. Some of the calibration/valving differences might be very subtle....like the difference between the XJ6 Sport shock and the XJR shock, perhaps. I dunno. Just speculating.
I read somewhere that German-market XJR6s had yellow Bilsteins on the rear with a unique spec. Never bothered researching that very far.
There should be a Bilstein number on the shock. Might be hard to see. If you can find it you can probably Google your way to an answer....if you can still find a webpage that shows Bilstein's older numbering system. The old number system actually included the shock specifications and could be de-coded. It appears they've gone to a new system, though.
Has anyone tried Koni shocks on their X300?
Cheers

Shocks
Hello. Thanks for the replies.Still have a question about sport mode? When engaged I thought the suspension changed to a stiffer ride. Anyone know how
this is accomplished? I thought maybe the shocks would be altered with an
electric charge which could change the ride stiffness? Or am I just wishing
for this! When I was looking for new shocks I was always asked if the car had
sport mode and if so the shocks were different and hard to find Maybe I just made a big problem for nothing> THANKS again
PAUL.

X300 never had active dampers. I think some models had ride levelling. You may have been asked if your X300 had sports suspension. This used different dampers from std, but your couldn't change the "mode" of the dampers. I don't think that the technology to which you are referring (magneto-rheological dampers) was available at the time that X300 was in production.

My 1990 T-Bird Super Coupe had driver switched "sport mode". Pretty cool. Flip a switch and the ride is firmed up by about 50%. Some Corvettes and others have had similar.

After moving from a XJ40 to a XJR, I HATE the ride. I understand the XJR is Jaguar's performance sedan, but geez.
I miss the smooth ride that I came to love in a Jag. XJR? rough, tramlining and hold on to the wheel! What where they thinking? It isn't a nimble little BMW. It's a whale. Even with the brick suspension, you can't really throw it around the road without having your hands full.
I don't know, maybe some people find it to their liking. If I did it again...a VDP or maybe...maybe xj12 x300. Sure the car is quick, until the corner comes and it ain't no sports car.
Go ahead and flame me, I'm having a Gordon's and tonic so I don't care.
p.s. I should add that I live in Michigan, the worst roads in the nation.

No flame from me :-)
I'm not unhappy with the firmness BUT if I had my hand in the design I would've gone bigger on the front and rear anti-roll bars and a bit softer on the springs and shocks.
I can't tell you how much time I've devoted to chasing down rattles. I'm sure that the firm suspension has played a part in shakin' things loose over the years.
Cheers

For information, for those wanting a firmer suspension, the Poly bush kits for XJ40 top and bottom wishbones (front) are a direct fit on the X300. I have them on my X300 Daimler 6 along with ARB link bushes and bottom shock bushes. These for example
Kit 56 - Jaguar XJ40 (Jaguar XJ40 Front Suspension)
