Swapping manual gearbox into XJR
#1
#2
Quite a few owners have done DIY auto to manual conversions of XJR6 cars. It is entirely possible. All the necessary hardware is available from breakers yards. The clutch cover and flywheel for the manual XJR6 are unique and very rare, so owners tend to use equivalent parts from naturally aspirated cars. I haven't read any reports of this not being successful, though obvious these parts lack the torque capacity of the correct parts.I offer a service to reprogramme the engine ECU specifically for use with a manual transmission. The engine will run without reprogrammig the ECU, but the ignition timing is retarded as the engine ECU goes into a form of "limp-home" in response to the missing signals from the transmission ECU, which would be removed during the conversion.

My XJR started life as an automatic
It now has the correct Getrag 290 box, and Australian HSV clutch plate and springs. It was converted my the previous owner, who is on these forums and may have some advice.
I understand the manual bits (bell housing, box) are from a 4 litre car or possibly an XJ40.
It recently needed the slave cylinder recondtioned for a leak. The slave cylinder is on the outside of the bellhousing, rather than inside it like the genuine XJR set-up (apparently).
It goes well with the manual box, but for zipping around town I think an Auto would be better - the manual has a heavy clutch, and I take it easy in first gear. I just use 1st to get rolling then give it some stick in 2nd and above. However the manual is great on a decent roadtrip.
