Default Temp gauge reading and high revs

Hello peeps
I have recently purchased a xj6 x300 3,2 1995.
Two things happening which is baffling me, firstly temp gauge reads normal when started rising to centre, when driving on the road it goes down into cold, almost straight away, cannot hear cooling fans on?

Next problem is that when started the revs are 2000 odd, stays like this all the time your in park or neutral even when warm, but when driving drops when in gear? what should the revs be on idle and normal driving?
Have i got an auto choke problem or throttle body dirty?
I have not done anything to it yet awaiting info.

PLEASE HELP.

Idle speed is on page 90 below . Put your hand on the throttle body tower and close the butterfly to the closed stop and see what you get . Post back from there .

On the cooling fans take the connector on the coolant temp switch on the 3 wire connector on the lower left aft on the radiator and with a paperclip jumper one white wire to the block wire will give you one fan or the other white wire to the same black will give you both fans . Its a low current control circuit so very low power . This verifies the fans work when needed .

Other then this coolant temp switch there are 2 temp sensors sitting next to each other , The one wire goes to the instrument gauge and the two wire goes to the Engine ECU . Both of these sensors have nothing to do with the cooling fan control on the X300 . You can find the wiring guide for this on page 87 below .

Yay found the problems?
First of all stepper motor was not seated properly maybe vibration had loosend it,
someone in the past had used some sort of gasket sealant which had gotten into the throttle body cakeing it in sealant.Found that the throttle return spring was so weak i moved it round onto next hole then sorted.
As to cooling problem new sender, fingers crossed as it was gauge reading that went awol
reads fine now?
Thanks peeps
