So I am attempting to bring this jag back to life. The previous owners never did take good care of her so I am doing my best to restore at reasonable price or even free! One of these things is a tilted steering column. I have attempted to tighten some screws, as other threads have recommended but no luck for me. Please see the picture I've attached.
Slacker , just kidding as this has eluded me as to how this top piece comes apart as I look into the lower positioned bolts removal holding the ignition switch.

I looked at it closer as I have the bottom half off . There are 2 philips screws holding the top in place . Yours is probably missing as I assume the spacers or bushings between the top plastic and the metal mount holes of the center metal column assembly . The screws are located left side straight above the black cap covering the red ignition switch .On the other side of the metal key barrel the right screw is straight above the small mounted speaker behind the speaker magnet edge . I'm not going to take mine off at this time but I assume there are spacers involved to get it to set correctly . Get different sizes from the hardware store and return what you don't use
Your screws are probably missing so I'll pull one and measure . Gotta run an errand so later tonight

.......ummmm.................wel l..................I don't know how to say this ........... .............I was wrong as there are 3 screws metric M4 - 0.70 thread pitch about 1/2 long , no spacer . The 3rd one is 2 inches aft of the left side one . The big box hardware stores don't always have as big of a selection as the independent store I go to . I will be taking her to the tire shop early AM to get a nail removed from the back tire and have them check out this clunking I get from the rear (left side) tire -_- I will write back tomorrow as I work on the steering column!
You can use a material in which to stick the screw onto the screwdriver so it stays on as you fish it into the holes . Clear double sided tape that has both releasing layers that only leave behind the sticking compound ( bugger tape ) works as there is a sticky putty sold for this specific purpose .
Look for a rumble on the rear end differential output shaft bearing as is common on X300 and can be replaced by yourself . Jaguars have a rear suspension like a corvette and not a solid axle all the way across as most rear wheel drives . There is a articulating output shaft coming out of the differential and is common the bearing goes bad as it exits the differential different then the outer wheel bearing .
Look also at the shock mount bushings that will clunk , upper and lower item 4 and 17
By lifting the top column cover up you can better see the area of interest as you feed the screw through on the forward left side . Once you tread and fix that position you can rotate the plastic around that axis and the other 2 will fall in line . Now you know why yours was loose and they punted the hardware , amateurs .
Well because the ECU for the steering column/mirrors/memory does not work I cannot adjust it. If I turn the wheel to the right (without Key in ignition) the steering column will also turn to the right and will not go past the position in my first picture on thread. If put Key in ignition, the steering column will lock and not move.
Thinking time out , see my link on the topic below yours with XJsmitten for some music while you wait . Jiggle the shift stick as you turn key to make the safety ( interlock ? ) switch work

But the mechanic this morning mentioned that most likely the clunking that I am hearing is the strut. So that'll be on my to do list (I'll be replacing both rear struts). He mentioned that the bushings are worn as well so it could be a multitude of things. Man and I thought my gf was the reason I was broke LOL
Well all the amps have been replaced and are new so I don't think its that. But I did attempt by the gearshift when you mentioned it but ended up breaking so many plastic pieces that I have my own jaguar branded legos lol

.......Can you elaborate ? Notice the focus on the key lockup as the priority before getting to the column movement . Do you have a fully charged battery ?
But in attempt to remove the shifter boot bezel and the wood trim I broke plastic pieces (the owner before me let it sit too much in the sun) so pieces were cracked. Even the bezel for the radio, clock, ac is cracked and broken. So that is what I meant by legos, many plastic pieces LOL
and the previous owner super glued the shifter leather trim to the wood panel, so that was another problem. Anyhow got most of it put all together. Ill worry about the steering column later
ever heard about the grinding noise on startup? I have that issue. ideas?
Wrong Post ......Below is a pic using paint putting in arrows in the area of interest . Mine is out of rig in that the top panel is 1/2 inch from closing as the previous owner had sealed it shut with sealer . I put the my sunroof on hold but decided to open that can of worms to repair it together . My motors do move the side rail parts around but come to a interference stop as they hit . It is suppose to rain heavily here Saturday and my pipes are off and and car outside so let me remove the headliner tonight to get my eyeballs on it then cover .

There is a bit of grinding noise in the starter which is natural ( mine has it ) and my be helped by removing the starter and applying some grease to the flywheel gears . The concern is if the starter does not extend fully into the gear and has a screeching gear slipping noise . This will ruin the flywheel if not corrected . Get a neighbor for sound advice (pun intended )
Where you able to get the starter to rotate since last posting ?
Did you have full battery voltage of 12.77 volts ?
