Default Trans fluid options.

What kind of trans fluid do I need for my 97 vdp? I've read that dex3 will work, but I should use a synthetic? I work at a subaru dealer and we have dex 3 and subaru HP (which is syn), they are supposidly backwards compatible, would that make it able to be used in my jag? Or what are your opinions? Thanks!

I went with Mobil 1 syn. Several members of long standing felt that syn. was best.

I get my transmission serviced every 30,000 k,s
This year I will have all the oil flushed and new added
I usually leave the choice of fluid up to the transmission specialists
I have heard Dex 3 is okay and did find a bottle in the boot when I bought the car

Dex 3 is what is called for from that era of motoring, and is still just fine today. PROVIDING it is changed out as specified from that era, and most are not.

Synthetics have taken over, big time, and are fast becoming the "standard" oil/fluid.

I use "Full Synthetic Multi Vehicle Trans Fluid" in all my Jags, and have dome so for many years. Down here that spec is marketed by Nulon, Penrite, Valvoline, and a few others.

The Synthetic ATF has the added ability to handle heat a tad better than mineral, and then there is the "extended service interval" discussion that started the whole Synthetic world in the first place.

I also that Synthetic ATF in the power steering system, and that has made a difference to that system.
