The interior lights of my '97 Jaguar X-300 are not working, what is the most common problem?

If you pull off the plastic cover on the right hinge the wires chaff

the wire color is Brown / White as power for both dome lights

The fuse is # 2 / 5 amp trunk fuse box

Thanks Lady Penelope,
The fuse is ok, I still need to check the wire.

The boot lid latch switch can fail. The switch is a separate part from the latch.

The switch is attached to the latch mechanism inside the trunk lid. But check the right hinge wire bundle, as Lady P. suggested. That is the more likely problem. And easier to get to.

Note that if the alarm system arms properly, the latch switch is in the closed position. But it could be stuck in the closed position which would prevent the trunk lights from coming on when you open the lid. Also in this case the "trunk open" indicator on the dash would stay off.

Thanks Richard,

I'll check the wire first and also check if the trunk open light is lit on the dashboard.

The first thing I would check in the right hinge cover and look at the wires there.
My trunk and plate lights didn't work. Found several broken wires. Spliced them
and everything worked great.

I checked the wires at the right hinge and found 2 broken wires, fixed them again and the lights are working again.
Thank you all for the help.
All the best wishes for the new year.

Looking back at this, I believe my switch logic was reversed. As in Imiguel's current thread, he found the trunk switch allowed him to lock and arm the system when that switch was off or open (disconnected/trunk lights off). So, under normal conditions, when the trunk is closed, the switch is open. And vice versa. Hope this makes sense!

Andre1962, thank you for that update. Did your repair happen to correct any problems with central locking/alarm arming?

Hi Richard,
There are no problems with central locking/alarm arming.
The switch is working correctly.

Now the the trunk interior lights are fixed ( those wires are breaking very easy near the henge) I see that the numberplate lights are not working.
So I need to look for more broken wires.
Can someone tell me the colours of the wires of the numberplate lights?
Thank you.

All wire colors are documented in the Electrical Guide (S97_SED.pdf).
The .pdf is over 14mb so it is a larger file than can be posted to this thread.

Gus should have it on his site.

For a !997

See page 16 and 82

Red / Pink wire for the left lamp, Purple / White for the right lamp

The wires going into the lamp assembly can be fragile

Thank you very much Lady penelope.
I'm afraid that I need to renew alle the wires at the hinge, I think they are going to break one by one.

Greetings,

André
