Default What belts do I need?! & spark plug seals?

Standard 3.2 AJ16 with aircon. I've found 101 different part numbers for drive belts - some places saying the alt. belt is different for a car with aircon, others making no mention of this...?

Also, does the AJ16 have individual spark plug seals? If so, are they likely to need replacing with the plugs, and where do I get them?!

Ta for any input!

No help on the belts, sorry. Sometimes the cataloging/listings from aftermarket suppliers is inaccurate. I order 'em from a Jag specialist and let him figure it out :-).

The spark plugs themselves do not have seals. The *cam cover* has a round seal of each spark plug well, though. If you have oil in your spark plug wells, you need new seals.

Cheers

Hi Ziggy! I replaced belt on mine some time ago, went to company called Jayar, they gave me a belt which is a bit too narrow and slightly longer than the previous one, but it works. You can have a look in my thread (link in signature), I believe someone actually mentioned some numbers for the belt there!

That's how I understood the situation with the seals Doug, but I can only find a cam cover seal set for the XJ40 - the X300 only seems to have the main seal listed. Time to actually speak to some suppliers!

The same goes for the belts I guess - at least I know not to go to Jayar! I've not found anyone listing the 5PK990 (the part number given on your thread) as for an X300 so I'll ask an expert so I've got someone to blame when it goes wrong!

Cheers

Hahaha I never said guys at Jayar were to blame, as I've never had any problems with parts from them before, just had that one listed wrong in catalogue :P But I'm not complaining, it does the job and as long as it lasts me for 3k miles, then I'm going to be even more happy you can always call up your local Jaguar spare parts department, that's how I found some other info I needed, like my paint code

Well my local motor factors needed to know whether the alt. belt was 4 or 5 groove, and whether I wanted a cam cover gasket set or just the main gasket. Sounds hopeful, but lets see what turns up tomorrow!

So, cam cover off (was changing the spark plugs, so part of the job already done...), discovered that the old gasket is indeed a bit worse for wear... and the new one's for an AJ6.

Back together with the old one held together with blue RTV - and the whole job to be done again when I eventually get the right gasket!

Gasket returned - and the belts weren't the right ones either! Back to square one...

I would have ordered them from SNG Barratt - I've used them before but their site doesn't make it clear which bits I need. I emailed them but they took so long to get back to me that I'd got them from the local motor factors in the mean time. When they did reply it was just a request for my VIN - so I've sent that to them and am now waiting again!

jagspares.co.uk seem to have what I need, although there's no mention of the plug seals...

I'll have another chance of some 'car time' at the weekend so I really want the bits by then!

SNG Barratt have yet to reply, & I've found the plug seals on jagspares.co.uk, so fingers crossed they'll be the right bits this time!

The latest set arrived yesterday (impressively quick service!) and they look like the right bits this time! Should have a chance to get them fitted on Sat morning

partsgeek.com has been a great source for me for our x300 parts. I've gotten spark plug seals from them recently and I can't remember which belt i've ordered in the past but I had no problems with it

Well I didn't get chance to fit them, but the gaskets certainly look right (I snapped a pic of the old ones!) and the belts are too - they've got the same part number on as the old Jag branded ones... and yes, realising that the part number was there all along does make me feel a tad silly!

More bits-swappage will occur next weekend... perhaps the to-do list will actually decrease in length for once?!

yeah, tell me about it not enough time, and too damn cold & wet to do anything... blooming time change, I wake up and it's too dark already to do anything... But hey, if you say they look good enough, I hope they'll fit without problems! All the best mate!
