what to look for
hi everyone,
I'm new to jags and would appreciate some advice! I've got my eye on a xj6 4.0 sport 95 m reg! going for not much money looks clean and tidy. I haven't looked at it yet but want a few hints before i do. I've read the engines are great what about the gearboxes? do they smoke from start up? etc etc also would appreciate honest mpg figures i've been living with a c180 merc for two years which believe it or not only gets 21 mpg!! am i going to be looking about the same or am i dreaming!?!?!? i don't mind a bit less but if it's going to be regular 15's i'm probably gonna have to give it a miss. would appreciate your advice many thanks neil

14 mpg! Crikey and I thought I was hard done to getting 19 mpg (14.7 l/100km in local speak) in the daily traffic from my 1997 XJ6 4.0 litre. As soon as I get out of town in the Jag (not often, we have a Discovery 3 for expeditions) it easily betters 25. I don't think the Sport would be any different. Be sure to use 98 octane.
Check other threads for common issues (minor trim items like the clock and the drinks holder in the central armrest are irritatingly expensive to fix) and as always buy on condition - bodywork and interior trim are very expensive to fix - and a good service history; but I've found my car to be very reliable. In the last 2 years I've had one bottom hose, a couple of coils (there are 6, one on each sparkplug), an exhaust mounting, and have just replaced the front brake rotors and had front and rear pads in addition to regular servicing every 6 months. All wearing items in a 14 year old car that is used almost every day. I also had the headlining replaced as it was starting to sag over the rear seats ($400). I think the key is to find a mechanic that specialises in older Jags - here in Perth I use Roadbend and they are really good in case anyone local is reading!
Get a good one and it will do you good service for years. Good luck!
