Both of my AC bulbs are out, and while I don't inheriently mind paying $8 or so a bulb, I can't help but imagine I can find a bulb without the mount and blue cap much cheaper. I have no interest in changing to LEDs. I like the old green look.

 

Finding cheaper replacements is easy. The problem I ran into was matching the color and intensity. The mis-match is far more annoying than I would've guessed!

Eventually I bought a dirt cheap a/c control panel on Ebay. $15 or something like that. Never need the control panel. I just harvested all the bulbs

I found some grain-o-wheat type T 1-3/4 size bulbs that worked in our XJ40 at bulbtown.com. You might search their offerings for options. They're inexpensive enough that you can buy a few different options to test. Here's just one example:
