I've been resisting saying this, but it's been fine since the weekend (8 starts so far), so I'm going to tentatively declare it fixed! Watch it not start this evening...

Strange that the temp sensor reported sensible values through the OBD but as replacing it appears to have cured the issue, the blame must lie there. Easy fix at least.

Checked the antifreeze at the same time (as I've not had the car during any cold weather). Or should I say I checked the water?

Thanks again Doug.
